Music is my savior.
I love writing about movies obviously, but let's take a quick detour to let you know about my latest record / project that should be out very soon! First two tracks are up!
I love recording covers sometimes more than originals. I think the reason is I love celebrating songs that inspire me. The idea of getting to sing them is exciting and I don’t have to be as self-conscious since these aren’t my words. I’m paying tribute but I’m also putting my own stamp on something I’ve adored. My new record is coming along great and should be completed for Friday, the 9th. Only thing is - I'm borrowing from Juliana Hatfield and covering a slew of songs from a favorite songwriter as a new yearly project. First up is Matthew Sweet whose Girlfriend was one of three records that changed my life - it made me ask my dad to buy a guitar (the others were In Utero and Exile in Guyville - a couple years later is when I heard Being There by Wilco).
Though I never got to meet Kurt obviously, I did meet Liz Phair at SXSW at a Starbucks and then hung out with Matthew for an hour in Evanston @ Space. It's not very often you get to meet someone that is responsible for turning you into a musician but boy was he a sweet guy. We talked movies, Chicago-style pizza and of course about his songs. It only seems appropriate that I put my stamp on a number of selections from his discography focusing on everything up to Kimi Ga Suki (which in my opinion is his last truly great album though he's always had good songs since then too). I couldn't be more happy to have jammed with a real drummer again in the form of Pete Nickerson as well as Cezary Borawski. In case you want to hear the first tracks, they're up on Bandcamp right now and the rest will be available in a week. Some of which rock. Give this your time, very excited/proud! More reviews and write-ups coming soon once things settle down - thank you for your patience and for being a subscriber.
